Ice on the outdoor unit.
Frost on the outdoor coil is normal in a Vancouver winter, and the unit defrosts itself on a schedule: the fan stops, the refrigerant reverses, steam rises off the coil, and water drips out the bottom. A coil that stays buried in ice, a fan blade frozen in place, or ice sheeting over the top of the cabinet is not normal, and usually points to a failed defrost board or sensor, a bad outdoor fan motor, or a low charge. Don't chip at the ice, because coil fins bend easily and the repair gets bigger; switch to emergency heat and call us.

Short cycling.
A heat pump that starts and stops every few minutes usually has restricted airflow, a charge problem, a failing sensor or control board, or was oversized on day one. It's worth a prompt call, because every restart hammers the compressor, the most expensive part in the machine. Ductless mini-split trouble.
Mini-split trouble shows up as a head blinking a fault code, one zone cold while the others run fine, a head dripping water down the wall, or airflow that's weaker than it used to be. Many of these trace back to condensate drainage, a dirty blower wheel, or a communication fault between the head and the outdoor unit, and a proper diagnostic sorts them out quickly. Every heat pump repair visit starts with instruments: refrigerant pressures, electrical readings, airflow. When the charge is low we leak-test instead of just adding refrigerant, because a top-off alone is a temporary fix. You get the finding and the repair price in writing before any work begins, and nobody will pressure you to sign during a service call. Common questions about heat pump repair.
My heat pump is steaming and dripping in winter. Is it broken?
Usually not. In winter, frost builds on the outdoor coil, so the unit runs a defrost cycle: the outdoor fan stops, the system reverses with a whoosh, and steam rolls off the coil while meltwater drips out the bottom. That's the machine working as designed. The time to call is when the coil stays cased in ice for hours, which points to a defrost or refrigerant problem.
Do you charge a diagnostic fee for heat pump repair?
There's a flat trip charge for diagnostic visits on existing equipment, and you'll hear the amount before we head your way. Move ahead with the repair and it usually rolls into the job. Quotes for new equipment installs are free, and Ridge members pay no trip, overtime, or diagnostic charges at all.
Should I repair my 13-year-old heat pump or replace it?
Two quick tests help. If the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new system, or the repair cost times the unit's age tops $5,000, replacement is usually the better spend.
