What your furnace symptom usually means.
- No heat at all. Before you call, check the thermostat batteries, the breaker, and the service switch on the side of the furnace (it looks like a light switch). If those check out, the usual suspects are a failed igniter, a bad capacitor, or a control board.
- Short cycling. The furnace fires, runs a minute or two, and shuts back down. One of the most common causes is overheating from a clogged filter or blocked airflow tripping the limit switch, and a dirty flame sensor dropping the flame signal is another. - Blower runs but the air is cold. The fan is moving air the burners never heated. On gas that points to the igniter, flame sensor, or gas valve; on electric, failed heat strips or a stuck sequencer. Sometimes it's just the fan switch set to ON instead of AUTO, which costs nothing to fix.
- Ignition or pilot problems. Clicking with no light-off, or three tries and then a lockout, points at the ignition system. Older furnaces with a standing pilot that won't stay lit usually need a thermocouple, one of the cheaper fixes in the trade.
- Strange noises or smells. A boom at light-off means delayed ignition and shouldn't be ignored. Screeching is a blower motor or bearing on its way out. A dusty burning smell for the first day of heating season is normal; a persistent burning or gas smell is not, and gas smells mean leave the house and call your gas utility first.

Carbon monoxide and your furnace.
A gas furnace vents its combustion gases outside, but a blocked or disconnected vent or a cracked heat exchanger can let those gases, including carbon monoxide, reach your home's air. A cracked heat exchanger is not common, but it's the one furnace problem we never patch. Keep a working CO alarm near the bedrooms, and if it ever sounds, get everyone outside first and call 911 or your gas utility before you call us.

How the diagnostic visit works.
- 1 · You call. Tell us the symptom, and we'll tell you the flat trip charge for the diagnostic upfront and the soonest we can be out. No-heat calls get priority when our schedule allows.
- 2 · We diagnose. Electrical readings, the full ignition sequence, combustion and venting, airflow. We find the actual fault instead of swapping parts on a guess.
- 3 · You get numbers in writing. The repair is quoted before any work starts, and if you go ahead, the trip charge usually rolls into the job.
- 4 · We do the fix you approved. If the fix is a simple flame sensor cleaning, that's what you get, and you'll never be pressured to sign anything during a service call.

Repair or replace: how we run the numbers.
Replacement only wins when both things are true: the furnace is 15+ years old and the repair quote runs 30% or more of the cost of a new system (our rule of thumb from when to repair vs replace your furnace). Most gas furnaces last 15 to 20 years, according to Carrier, and the U.S. Department of Energy uses a 21.5-year average lifetime, so most repairs on a younger furnace are the right money. Take the sample math from that guide: a $950 inducer motor repair on an 18-year-old furnace is only about 11% of an $8,500 replacement, so you repair it and move on. A cracked heat exchanger flips the answer: it is a carbon monoxide risk and an expensive repair, and by the time one cracks the other parts are generally tired too.
When the math points to replacement, we'll say so plainly and quote it in writing. A 95% AFUE furnace burns about 16% less gas than an old 80% furnace for the same heat (80 divided by 95), so the upgrade pays back fastest in homes with the biggest gas bills.

Common questions about furnace repair.
How much does furnace repair cost in Vancouver?
It depends on the part that failed, so we quote every repair in writing after the diagnostic and before any work begins. There's a flat trip charge for diagnostic visits on existing equipment, disclosed upfront when you book, and it usually rolls into the job if you go ahead with the repair. Peak Care members save 10–20% on parts and labor depending on their plan.
Can you fix my furnace the same day?
When a furnace is down in cold weather we treat it as a no-heat emergency and prioritize same-day service when our schedule allows. Peak Care members are first in the dispatch queue, and the Ridge plan includes same-day emergency dispatch during business hours with next-morning response after hours. Should I repair my furnace or replace it?
Our rule of thumb: replacement only makes sense when the furnace is 15+ years old and the repair quote is 30% or more of the cost of a new system.
