How to get wildfire smoke smell out of your house.

Every smoke event, we get the same call: “I put in the MERV 13 filter you told me about and the house still smells like a campfire.” The filter is not defective. Smoke smell is a gas, and a particle filter does not remove gases. Here is what does.

Smoke smell is gas-phase, so MERV 13 and HEPA do not remove it. Only activated carbon does. Before you buy anything, do the free things: stop running the dryer, range hood, and bath fans (they depressurize the house and pull smoke in through every gap), set the thermostat fan to “on,” and close any fresh-air intake. Then add carbon, sized by pounds of media, not marketing. After the event, change the filter, because a smoke-loaded filter becomes its own odor source. Never use an ozone generator.

During a smoke event, check current conditions first

When smoke from fires in Eastern Washington, Oregon, or Canada moves into Southwest Washington, the Southwest Clean Air Agency posts air quality advisories for Clark and the surrounding counties, and Vancouver monitors can read “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” or worse for PM2.5. Neighborhood PurpleAir sensors often run higher than the official I-5 corridor monitors. Hot, stagnant stretches sometimes bring a separate ozone advisory for the Vancouver metro, and Oregon DEQ issues its own for the Portland side. Check swcleanair.gov and AirNow for current conditions, since this changes daily during an event.

Why the house still smells even with a good filter.

Wildfire smoke is two different pollutants sharing a ride, and they need two different tools.

The particles are PM2.5, the fine soot that makes the sky orange and shows up in AQI numbers. A MERV 13 filter captures most of it. That part of the problem is solved, and if you have already upgraded your filter, it is working, whether or not your nose agrees.

The smell is something else entirely: gas-phase organic compounds released when wood burns. Lignin, the stuff that makes wood rigid, breaks down into guaiacol and syringol, which is that specific sweet campfire smell. Alongside them come aldehydes, benzene, and a long list of other volatile organic compounds. These are individual molecules, hundreds of times smaller than the particles a filter is built to catch. They pass through MERV 13 and through true HEPA without slowing down.

This matters for more than comfort. A good share of the genuinely harmful compounds in wildfire smoke are in that gas phase, not stuck to the particles. If you can smell smoke indoors, you are breathing the fraction your filter was never designed to remove.

The only common residential technology that removes gases is activated carbon, which works by adsorption: the VOC molecules stick to an enormous internal surface area inside the carbon rather than being strained out by a mesh. That is the whole trick, and it explains everything else in this article.

First, find out how the smoke is getting in.

Before you spend a dollar on filtration, understand this: your house is not sealed. Anything you exhaust has to be replaced by an equal volume of outdoor air, and during a smoke event that outdoor air arrives through every crack, can light, and rim joist in the building. Most of the smoke smell in a Vancouver home during a smoke event is coming in through leaks the homeowner is actively creating.

This is the part almost nobody tells you, and it is free to fix.

If you run the dryer and a bath fan at the same time in a typical 1990s Vancouver tract home, you can be pulling 250 CFM of outdoor smoke into the house continuously. No filter on the market keeps up with that.

The protocol, in the order that actually works.

1. Stop depressurizing the house. (Free, do it now.)

Dryer off. Range hood off or low. Bath fans off. Whole-house fan off. Fresh-air damper closed. This costs nothing and typically makes the biggest single difference in how strong the smell is by evening.

2. Set the thermostat fan to “on,” not “auto.” (Free.)

On “auto,” the blower only runs when the system is heating or cooling, which on a mild smoky morning might be almost never. On “on,” it runs continuously and every cubic foot of air in the house keeps cycling through the filter and any carbon you have added. It also mixes the air so you do not get a stagnant, smoky back bedroom. Figure $5–$15 a month in extra fan runtime during smoke season.

3. Add activated carbon. (This is the actual smell fix.)

There are three tiers, and the difference between them is simply how much carbon you get.

  • Carbon-loaded pleated furnace filter ($25–$45). A normal pleated filter with a thin carbon layer. It genuinely helps, and it is the fastest thing you can buy locally today. But the carbon mass is small, so it saturates fast, roughly 30 days in heavy smoke, sometimes less. Once saturated it stops adsorbing.
  • Deep-bed carbon in a 4-inch or 5-inch media cabinet. If you already have a media cabinet on the return, there are carbon-blend media options that hold meaningfully more. If you do not have one, the cabinet retrofit is the same upgrade that lets you run MERV 13 without choking airflow, so it solves two problems at once.
  • A portable unit with real carbon weight. For a bedroom or the room you actually live in, this is the most effective dollar you can spend. The number that matters is pounds of carbon, and almost nobody advertises it prominently. An Austin Air HealthMate carries about 15 lb of carbon and zeolite; an IQAir HealthPro Plus carries about 5 lb. A $99 tower with a “carbon-infused” pre-filter carries a few ounces of carbon dust on a mesh, which is why it deodorizes a room for about a day and then does nothing. If the spec sheet does not state a carbon weight, assume it is negligible.

One caution on the furnace side: carbon-loaded and high-MERV filters are denser than the builder-grade filter that came with the system. In a 1-inch filter slot on a system with marginal ductwork, that added resistance can drop airflow enough to hurt performance. If your registers feel noticeably weaker after a filter change, that is the signal, and the fix is a deeper media cabinet, not a thinner filter.

4. Seal the return. ($, and it is permanent.)

If your return ductwork runs through a vented crawlspace or attic, sealing its seams and the filter-cabinet gaps stops the house from drinking outdoor air every minute the blower runs. It helps in smoke season, and it also lowers your bill in January. It is the one item on this list that keeps paying after the smoke clears.

5. Pressurize, if you want the real solution.

The advanced version, and what commercial buildings do: instead of fighting infiltration, supply a small amount of filtered outdoor air so the house sits slightly positive relative to outside. Air then leaks out through the cracks instead of in. This is a designed system, not a weekend project, but for households with someone who has asthma or COPD it is worth a conversation.

Getting the smell out after the smoke clears.

Smoke odor does not just float, it lands. Those VOCs adsorb onto carpet, drapes, upholstery, bedding, and settled dust, and then quietly release back into the air for days or weeks. That is why a house can still smell like smoke a week after the AQI came back to green.

  1. Change the furnace filter first. A filter loaded with smoke residue is an odor source sitting directly in your airstream. You are blowing air across it continuously. This is the most common reason a house still smells after the air outside is clear.
  2. Flush the house once outdoor AQI is genuinely good, ideally under 50. Open windows on opposite sides, run the whole-house fan if you have one, and move real volume through. This is the one time the fan is your friend.
  3. Wash the soft goods. Bedding, curtains, throw blankets, slipcovers. These hold more odor than anything else in the house.
  4. Wipe the hard surfaces with a mild detergent solution: walls, especially above heat sources, plus blinds, light fixtures, and the tops of door casings where the dust collects.
  5. Vacuum with a HEPA-bagged vacuum, including upholstery. A standard shop vac will just re-aerosolize the fine stuff.
  6. Keep the carbon running about a week longer than you think you need to. Off-gassing from surfaces continues after the source is gone.
  7. Clean the return grille and check the blower wheel. After a heavy season, the return grille and the blower wheel collect a film that keeps contributing smell. We clean blower wheels routinely on Peak Care visits for exactly this reason.

What does not work, and what makes it worse.

  • Ozone generators, “ozone shock” treatments, and anything sold as an “activated oxygen” purifier. Skip these. The EPA is unambiguous: at concentrations that are safe to breathe, ozone is not effective at removing odors, and it does not remove particles at all. Worse, ozone reacts with the organic compounds already in your air and forms new irritants, including formaldehyde and formic acid. One study EPA cites found that total organic chemicals in the air went up after ozone was introduced. Ozone also aggravates asthma, which is usually the exact reason someone bought the machine. And smoky stretches often put Clark County under an ozone advisory from outdoor smog at the same time, which makes adding more of it indoors an even worse idea.
  • Scented candles, plug-ins, and air fresheners. They mask smoke with a second smell and add their own VOCs. Burning candles also adds fine particulate, which is what you were filtering out in the first place.
  • Bowls of vinegar, baking soda, or charcoal briquettes. The idea is right, the scale is not even close. Adsorption depends on surface area contacting moving air. A bowl on the counter has almost no surface area and no airflow across it. Pounds of carbon in a moving airstream is the same principle done at a scale that actually matters.
  • UV lamps in the ductwork. Useful against biological growth on a coil. They are not a smoke odor control, and no UV lamp will remove guaiacol from your air.
  • Cracking a window at night “because the AQI drops.” Smoke settles at night in the valley and the numbers often look better than the air is. Unless AQI is genuinely good, you are importing the problem.
  • Running the whole-house fan “to clear it out” mid-event. You will replace your filtered indoor air with raw outdoor smoke in about twenty minutes.

A note on ozone advisories

Smoke and ozone are two different problems that happen to arrive together. Hot, stagnant, sunny air over a metro area cooks vehicle and industrial emissions into ground-level ozone, and wildfire smoke contributes precursors to that reaction. Ozone is a gas, so like smoke smell it goes straight through a MERV 13 filter, and like smoke smell, activated carbon is what captures it. If you have carbon running for the smell, it is helping with the ozone too.

When it is worth calling us.

Most of this is a homeowner job, and we would rather you do the free steps than buy something. Call when:

  • Your return ductwork runs through a crawlspace or attic and you have never had it sealed. This is the highest-value visit during smoke season.
  • Airflow drops noticeably when you install a better filter, which means the filter slot is undersized for the system and you need a media cabinet.
  • Someone in the house has asthma, COPD, is pregnant, elderly, or an infant, and you want a designed solution rather than a stack of portable units.
  • The smell persists after the outdoor air has been clear for a week or two and you have already changed the filter, which usually points to a loaded blower wheel, a dirty coil, or duct contamination.
  • You have an atmospheric-draft gas appliance and multiple exhaust fans, which is a backdraft and carbon monoxide risk, not just a smoke one.

The best time to do the structural work, media cabinet, return sealing, whole-home carbon, is May or June, before smoke season. But if you are reading this with the sky already brown, the free steps at the top of this article will get you most of the way through the week.

Common questions.

Will a MERV 13 filter get rid of the smoke smell?

No. MERV 13 captures the fine smoke particles that drive the AQI number, but smoke odor is gas-phase and passes straight through. You need activated carbon for the smell. Run both, they do different jobs.

Why does my house smell like smoke when all my windows are closed?

Because closed windows are not a seal. Anything that exhausts air, dryer, range hood, bath fans, forces an equal volume of outdoor air back in through gaps in the building. Leaky return ductwork in a crawlspace or attic does the same thing continuously whenever the blower runs.

Should I run my AC or heat pump during a smoke event?

Yes. A standard residential heat pump or AC recirculates indoor air rather than pulling in outdoor air, so running it filters and cools at the same time. Set the fan to “on” instead of “auto” so filtration continues between cooling cycles.

How long does it take for smoke smell to leave a house?

With the filter changed, the house flushed on a clear day, and textiles washed, most homes are back to normal within a few days to a week. If it lingers longer than that, the odor source is usually still inside: a saturated filter, a loaded blower wheel, or soft goods that have not been cleaned.

Do I need a whole-home air purifier, or is a portable enough?

For one or two rooms, a portable unit with real carbon weight is more effective per dollar. For whole-house coverage, or if someone in the home is in a sensitive group, an integrated solution on the air handler treats every room the ductwork reaches, and does not need to be moved around.

The bottom line.

If your house smells like a campfire, your filter is not broken and you did not buy the wrong one. You are dealing with a gas, and gases need carbon. Stop the exhaust fans that are pulling smoke in, run the blower continuously, put real carbon in the path of the air, and change the filter when it is over. That sequence handles smoke season in a Vancouver home better than any single product you can buy.
